Like many Nebraskan's I have been watching the developmental process that the Nebraska Health Education Standards have been evolving under. I believe that the process is working. It is gratifying to see that many people have been engaged in providing public feedback. It is important to remember that these particular standards do not require that our curriculum be aligned to them. We have local control in this area. They are certainly worth looking at and discussing, but ultimately the local School Board will vet and approve what is taught in the classroom with valuable input from our educators and patrons. The idea that some areas initially introduced in the first draft of the Health standards draft are best left to parents is a valid argument and one that will guide this process once it makes it to our local level in 2022.
